====================

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Officials aren’t sure, but they are investigating whether a residue that has popped up in the Surry County courthouse could be mold.
The residue was made known through an anonymous complaint filed to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, who then notified county officials, Surry County Manager Dennis Thompson said.

Thompson said an environmental engineer has been brought in to investigate the humidity level inside the building and determine if the substance is, in fact, mold.

If the resident is found to be mold, Thompson said the county will come up with a plan to clean it up.

Right now, dehumidifiers are being used in the courtrooms to bring down the humidity level, Thompson said.

No one would ever want to find mold growing in their homes. The main reason would be because of its hazards to health when its pores are inhaled. Various respiratory ailments would be acquired if that happens.

Yet, a mold remediation product wants to send a message to all the homeowners who have been thinking that it’s impossible to kill mold without an inspector. An inspector could conduct reliable mold testing and other things, but we are now able to do the rest of the clean up process. And yes, we will be doing it by ourselves! Expect surprisingly effective and impressive results. All of these can only be attained through Molderizer, the most-recommended mold remediation product by professional inspectors.

WILLINGBORO — School officials have opted to close Willingboro High School this week over possible mold contamination, but two other schools where mold may have formed will remain open.

Superintendent Ronald G. Taylor said substances believed to be mold were discovered Thursday at the high school off Kennedy Way, Memorial Middle School on Van Sciver Parkway, and J.C. Stuart Elementary School on Sunset Road.

Under district procedures, environmental consultant TTI Environmental of Moorestown was called to perform air quality tests at all three buildings. The results aren’t expected to be returned until Wednesday, but as a precaution the administration closed the high school and sealed off the two rooms in Memorial and J.C. Stuart where the suspected mold was found.

The three schools already had mold testing performed by an environmental consultant as required under the district procedures. The results are not yet provided until Wednesday but the high school had already closed the building to assure safety.

The parent put the blame to the school dorm which has obvious mold symptoms.

Many schools that showed signs of mold had taken immediate action to spare their students and teachers on its risk to health. Some would make it to the point to close the school just to assure that the mold are totally removed and prevented. Mold brings serious hazards to people whose immunity is not that strong like children.

==========================

Dear Dr. Gott: My son lives in a dorm that has obvious signs of mold. He has been sick the entire school year with sinus and throat issues. When he comes home, he is not necessarily better. The “illness” seems to be cyclical. He gets almost healthy and then gets sick again. He is seldom free of these symptoms. He has had a couple rounds of antibiotics with no complete relief. Do you have any suggestions for getting his health back? I have already given him an air purifier and Damp Rid.

Dear Reader: First and foremost, you need to contact his school and inform it of the mold problem. It is the school’s responsibility to have this potentially serious issue resolved.

Because of the sensitivity of kids to mold, schools prefer to hire professional mold experts to take care on mold infestations in their facility. These mold experts have advanced knowledge on dealing with various mold removal processes from mold testing, mold clean up and even prevention of its growth and comeback.

Mold can cause complications to health that if disregarded, could worsen the condition. The first thing to consider rather than taking unending medications is to suppress the growth and spread of mold which can only be done by the real experts.

More than 4 feet of flood water rushed through the halls first floor.

Spreading black mold is already found in the village hall after a contractor ripped out the wallboard. Mold can be a serious effect of the flood. Affected properties and the people living and working in there are risking their health when exposed to mold. Ridgewood is not the only place to experience mold infestation but the whole country is. Hurricane Irene left a scenario that is perfectly fit for mold multiplication.

Read more about Ridgewood, Another Victim of Mold After Hurricane Irene

======================

If you were on vacation or just haven’t checked in lately, catch up with all that happened in Ridgewood this past week.

1) From the moment the storm dumped huge amounts of rain on Saturday, we were there LiveTweeting, LiveBlogging, LiveWriting (made the last one up, but we wrote lots of articles, too). You can read up on a thorough account right here at this link. It takes you through the preparation down to the last moments of the cleanup.

2) Village Hall’s first floor will need a massive cleanup effort; the damage could total $200,000 and last until sometime early next year. The three-foot-tall barriers the village put up at Village Hall were no match for the four-plus feet of water that rushed through the first floor. A contractor has ripped out the sheet rock already (mold had developed), and the village council is expected to pass an emergency appropriation next week. There could be FEMA money coming the council’s way, too.

=========================

Read more about Fields Destroyed, Big Projected Bill for Village Hall Cleanup This Week at: patch.com

========================

When situation comes this worse, cleaning up alone could be a major effort. We can’t even make sure that mold will be completely removed because mold is not visible. Wherever there could be moisture and nutrients, mold will grow even on areas that we can’t see and reach.

That is why experts recommend a mold testing process. This could be of great help because mold experts know best the potential places mold can grow. This could prevent further damages of properties infested by mold and avoid the risks it brings to our health.

The crews are working out to clean the areas and get off the standing water through the help of generators, which is according to them, difficult than having the power returned.

Aside from damages like the power outage, mold is one of the school’s biggest problems. Most affected by mold are the cafeteria and the gym which are the main functional areas of the school.

After Hurricane Irene receded, mold is among of the biggest headache of the public. It is an extension of the damages caused by the catastrophe and it’s extremely dangerous to people allergic to it. But it is a concern because mold may not be visible all the time that in some cases, we’re not even aware they are infesting our properties. During this kind of situations, immediate mold removal can’t be performed because of being unawares on its presence.

=============================

Teachers signed in, waited for about an hour, picked up their checks and then went home.

That was the routine at Rochelle Middle School Wednesday morning as teachers arrived to find much of the school under water. The second floor had 2 inches of standing water in some places.

With power still out in the area, crews worked with the help of a generator to get the water — and growing mold — out of the school.

One teacher said, after returning from her classroom, “It’s a hard pill to swallow. It’s devastating.”

Lenoir County Schools Interim Superintendent Steve Mazingo toured the campus with Principal Nicholas Harvey Wednesday morning. The school was one of the last to start cleaning up because power was out at the campus. Mazingo said other schools received repairs because they had their power returned earlier in the week.

“If we get power back (Wednesday), we’ll be calling in a professional cleaning crew — it’s tough working on generators,” Mazingo said. “If (Lenoir County Schools) opens (today), I doubt Rochelle will open.”

Harvey said Monday’s rain did not help, and it’s been difficult to estimate the extent of the damage.

“There are some skylights blown out,” he said. “And there’s a 70 by 15 foot hole in the roof.”

There is also mold in three parts of the school, including the cafeteria and gym.

Sometimes we think that we already had enough treatments done to get rid of mold. But we are unaware that mold is still there, because it thrives on damp and hard-to0reach places. Usually, it is recommended to get professional help from mold inspectors and conduct mold testing in your place.

Once mold is discovered, the health risks it brings can be given immediate attention. Thus, early symptoms of mold allergies can be promptly treated and mold build up will be removed and suppressed. It is important to get the most reliable professional in this field because mold growth can cause a major misery among your households in the future.

Some of these are mild while others can be quite serious if not treated, or if the contamination is not removed. The following article will examine some of these dangers, particularly to certain groups of people, and show you what symptoms to look for to see if you might have a problem.

At Risk Groups

Of course, fungus is not good for anyone who may be exposed to it, but some people are at greater risk for various problems than others. Primarily, infants and elderly people are at the highest risk because they have less developed immune systems, or ones that are beginning to wear down. However, various other conditions can affect the immune systems of other adults, putting them at great risk as well. This includes pregnancy, chemo therapy, or diseases such as AIDS and HIV. Also, anyone with other respiratory conditions may be very adversely affected.

Allergic Reactions

The black mold health risks that are most prominent are allergies. These reactions can be mild or severe, depending on the person. Type one allergies happen most often, and exhibit quite standard symptoms. These include itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, and a runny nose, not unlike typical pollen allergies many people have. After this is type 3, resulting in slightly more serious symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and a tight feeling in the chest, not unlike people with asthma experience. The most severe allergic reaction one can experience is bronchopulmonary mychosis. This rarely occurs, and even when it does it is usually only in those with asthma. If it happens, it means the lungs are filled with fungus completely.

More Severe Reactions

For some, their black mold health risks are more severe than simply allergic reactions. Toxicity is one example of this, a condition in which the sufferer will experience headaches, nausea, sore throat, and dizziness. If not properly treated this condition has the potential to be deadly. Itchy rashes can also occur if skin damage happens. Over time, even internal organs and the arteries can be damaged, which can cause serious side effects like internal bleeding. The organs may also begin to produce mycotoxin, a poisonous byproduct of fungus breaking down the organs. Sometimes diseases can even develop, like chronic respiratory ailments or even cancer.

Black mold health risks can affect many people, and become large problems. This is present in many homes and other buildings, often without the occupants’ knowledge. If you suspect that this may be an issue, it would be best to consult a doctor for advice on what to do.

When symptoms of allergies seem to be constant and unceasing it is possible that the allergy is to something that is close at hand. Many people who are allergic to dust, pollens and animal dander may also have mold allergies.

Work environments can also be a factor in developing a mold allergy. People are often exposed to molds and mildew while at work. Working in a damp environment is a prime area for molds and molders to grow and to be exposed to them.

The signs of a mold allergy are similar to those of allergies to other things. Some of the more noticeable signs are itchy eyes, sneezing, runny noses and head congestion. A mold allergy will cause similar reactions so it is important to be tested to confirm if this is what one is suffering from.

Spores are released by mildews into the air and as they travel an one comes into contact with the spores they will experience a reaction. Spores can also grow on the body or in the nasal cavity. Finding the source of molds will also be helpful in controlling the allergy.

Different types of spores are released at different times of the year. Some thrive in dry windy weather while others spread in foggy humid weather. The most popular time for allergies is July to the end of summer but molds and mildew allergy can be suffered from year round.

Molds can grow in a variety of areas. It can be found in the soil of house plants, and in the walls of homes or in basements. Damp areas such as kitchens and bathrooms are common places for molds to be found indoors. Outdoors there are just as many places that mold can grow and thrive. In the fall leaves piled on the ground are a perfect place for mold to grow. Compost piles, grassy areas and rotting logs are all places mold can be found growing outdoors. It is common for outdoor molds to die off during the winter.

Keeping molds and mildew out of the immediate surrounding environment will help to prevent coming in contact with molds and help to control allergies. Airing out bathrooms and other damp areas in the house is a way to keep them dry. Making sure not to let water sit on bathroom floors or under leaky pipes will also help to prevent mold. If a basement has flooded replacing the padding and carpet can be a way to be sure that mold is not growing there.

Suffering from an allergy can be miserable. Take the time to consult a medical professional if symptoms are consistently a concern. Although allergies can not be cured limiting contact with troublesome allergens can be beneficial.

Mold is nasty stuff that makes your house seem like it isn’t clean! So what can you do?

The very first thing you should do would be to identify which kind of mold it is, and also, whether it is mold or mildew as they can be rather similar. As a general rule-of-thumb, mildew is typically a grayish white, while mold may be black or can be found in quite a rainbow of colors. Mold also smells very musty and unpleasant so I can not understand why anyone would want to stimulate it in their home.

Most people eventually have removed their bread to discover some wonderful greenish fuzzy blobs on it. Well, here we’re not speaking about the mold that appears on food, but the kind of mold in the house that appears on the walls and ceilings inside the bathroom, in the crawlspace, the basement or just about anywhere in the home. However, it is most usual to discover it where there is dampness and moisture.

Unfortunately, mold is a fungus and mold spores can spread quickly. The spores are invisible to the eye, which means you really need to be thorough in getting rid mold and keeping it away. How you do this depends on the kind and location of the mold in the house.

Fortunately today, you can purchase a mold test kit which will tell you which kind of mold it is. If you don’t want to do this, you can find a mold inspector to get this done for you. They should identify any molds and advise a course of action for you.

By far the worst type of mold in the house to discover is black mold. Black mold can be toxic and has been associated with aggravating certain health conditions associated with the lungs and really should therefore be taken care of by professionals. Among the worst locations to find mold is in the drywall fabric, as this cannot be removed by propriety cleaners and the drywall will need to be cut down and replaced. Otherwise, the solution is quite simple.

In general terms, you can buy suitable mold removal products in the supermarket and DIY stores. Alternatively, you can use a bleach and water solution that may also help eliminate smell. If using any kind of solution, be sure to wear protective clothing and a mask so that you don’t inhale the fumes.

After you have removed the mold, you need to tackle the root reason for any damp, as this is why the mold thrives. In bathrooms and showers, ensure you vent out the room during and after you bathe and wipe down surfaces. In kitchens, open the window if at all possible when cooking and use an extractor fan. You may even prefer to get a portable dehumidifier since this will extract the moisture efficiently from a room.

A somewhat surprising option to a number of people is to reduce pot plants! If you think about it, you water your pot plants, which in turn will create excess moisture in the house. So be sure you eliminate the plants from any locations that currently have a problem.

Hope a few of the above helps you in getting rid of mold in the house permanently. Getting rid of mold in the house can be achieved efficiently for most different types of mold, providing you know what you are doing.

Some studies claim that half of all homes have unrealized moisture imbalances. This creates an ideal environment for fungi to thrive. All indoor types can be harmful, whether or not they produce toxins, but black molds are the most serious. Mold testing tips and removal tips should be followed to quickly identify and eliminate problems.

Search for any signs of molds. They often grow and develop into furry textured spots and can also resemble yellowing materials or stains. They may be green, white, black or gray in color. The black type is the one that is most harmful and can cause the most problems.

Buying an instant testing kit allows an individual to get immediate results. Read and follow all mold testing tips given. Sampling any suspected growths with a kit, they can then be identified as molds or not within only ten minutes. This requires no laboratory analysis, but gives only very general information. For more details on what form of mold is present, samples should be sent to a laboratory. This can help determine whether growths are pathogenic, toxigenic, or allergenic.

Search for growths everywhere possible. Growth is more common in some areas than in others, so pay these areas particular attention. Key areas are cellars or basements that have undergone water damage or underneath damp carpeting. Wet cardboard or newspapers is also a great environment for growth. Thoroughly inspect the kitchen and bathroom sinks, behind and under refrigerators, and surrounding air conditioners. Walls holding plumbing equipment and any leaking windows also require a thorough search.

Kits that test the air can be rented or purchased to determine the scope of overall problems in homes. These can identify multiple circulating spores and measure their concentrations. Testers can measure moisture levels as well and lead to areas of water leaks and pooling. These conditions must be corrected immediately to eliminate and prevent problems. A guide can be purchased with diagrams and mold testing tips to assist individuals as they search.

If physical symptoms occur during searching, discontinue the process immediately. Spores may be circulating in the air supply that are toxic if inhaled. Symptoms of poisoning are vomiting, headaches, nausea, coughing, irritated eyes and sneezing. Extreme forms of contamination may even result in bleeding of the nose and lungs. If these are experienced and toxic growth is suspected, immediately contact a professional. Do not continue exposure to molds.

Unwanted growths are possible on any materials containing cellulose that have access to moisture. Conduct thorough examinations of buildings, looking around any appliances that leak or collect moisture. If a substance looks like fungi, it can be tested and confirmed within a few minutes. Remember to follow any mold testing tips or precautions. If confirmed, laboratory testing should be done. Air quality and moisture analysis help determine how extensive problems are and identify problem areas. If physical symptoms of poisoning are experienced, discontinue searching and get a professional to help.
